Mike Blong
drums
Mike began playing drums in 2002 while living in Ohio. He started off as a self-taught student and began playing rock music in high school. He started studying privately in 2003. In high school, Mike began playing in the school jazz band, orchestra, marching band, and concert band. While delving into jazz and other types of music, he continued playing rock in a locally successful band called "Amadeus.” His group recorded a full-length album in a professional studio (MetroSync Studios) in Cleveland, OH and went on to perform at many popular venues in the area: The House of Blues, The Odeon, Peabody’s, and many other clubs in the area. By the end of high school, he had performed at many local clubs with Amadeus, performed three consecutive years at Ralph Wilson Stadium (home of the Buffalo Bills) with the Hudson High School Marching Band, performed at City Walk Concert Hall & City Walk Jazz Club in Orlando, FL, and opened for the world-famous "Count Basie Orchestra" with the Hudson High School Jazz Band.
After graduating high school, Mike was accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston by way of their World Scholarship Tour. Since arriving in Boston, Mike has studied with many of Berklee’s notable faculty including: Kenwood Dennard, Larry Finn, Tony "Thunder" Smith, and Jackie Santos. Outside of Berklee, he has recently started private studies with Billy Martin (drummer of the famous organ trio: Medeski, Martin & Wood).
Now in his fourth semester, he has grown into a well-rounded musician after two years of education at Berklee. As a drummer, he enjoys playing funk, r&b, jazz, rock, hip-hop, Latin, and African-influenced music. He continues to explore the drum set and have recently expanded into a variety of hand percussion. His other hobbies include exploring a lot of technology, electronic music, recording software and studio techniques.
